Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by massive, rust-red sand dunes in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of southern Namibia. Located in the Namib Desert—one of the oldest in the world—it is famous for its surreal, high-contrast landscapes.

Top Highlights

Deadvlei: A white clay pan known for its 900-year-old dead camelthorn trees, which are blackened by the sun and set against orange dunes and a deep blue sky.
Big Daddy: One of the tallest dunes in the area, standing at approximately 325 meters (1,065 feet). It offers a challenging climb and panoramic views over Deadvlei.
Dune 45: Known for its elegant shape, this is the most photographed and climbed dune, especially during sunrise when the light creates dramatic shadows.
Sesriem Canyon: A natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years, located near the park entrance.

Essential Visitor Tips

Best Time to Visit: May to September is ideal for cooler temperatures, while peak tourism occurs from July to November.
Early Access: Staying at NWR-run accommodations like the Sesriem Campsite or Sossus Dune Lodge allows you to enter the park an hour before the main gate opens for sunrise.
Transport: While the road to the 2WD parking lot is paved, the final 5km to Sossusvlei is a 4x4-only track. A shuttle service is available for those without a 4WD vehicle.
Permits: Park entry fees (approx. 150 NAD per person) are payable at the NWR reception in Sesriem.
