Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon, located in southern Namibia, is the largest canyon in Africa and generally considered the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon. Carved by the Fish River over 650 million years, the canyon measures approximately 160 km (100 miles) long, up to 27 km wide, and reaches depths of nearly 550 meters. It is a major part of the  Namibia's and second most visited tourist attraction. 

Visiting & Practical Information

The canyon is a remote wilderness area primarily accessed through the Hobas campsite (northern entrance/viewpoints) and the Hot Springs Resort (southern end). 

• Best Time to Visit: The cooler months from May to September are ideal, as summer temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F).
• Fees: Entry to the park is approximately N$80 per person plus a small vehicle fee (N$10), payable at the Hobas gate.
• Top Viewpoints: The main viewpoint near Hobas offers the most iconic panoramic views of the "Hell’s Bend" meander. 

The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail 

This is one of Southern Africa's most famous and grueling multi-day hikes. Due to extreme heat and flash flood risks, it is strictly only open from May 1 to September 15. 

• Distance & Duration: The trail is roughly 85–90 km long and typically takes 4 to 5 days to complete.
• Requirements:
• Group Size: A minimum of 3 people is required for safety.
• Medical Certificate: Hikers must present a medical certificate of fitness (no older than 40 days) at the start.
• Self-Sufficiency: There are no facilities or reliable mobile reception inside the canyon; hikers must carry all food, water purification, and emergency supplies.
• Booking: Permits are limited to 30 people per day and often sell out months in advance through Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR).
