The Fish
River Canyon, located in southern Namibia, is the largest canyon
in Africa and generally considered the second largest in the world after the
Grand Canyon. Carved by the Fish River over 650 million years, the canyon
measures approximately 160 km (100 miles) long, up to 27 km
wide, and reaches depths of nearly 550 meters. It is a major
part of the Namibia's and second most visited tourist attraction.
Visiting & Practical Information
The canyon is a remote wilderness area primarily accessed
through the Hobas campsite (northern entrance/viewpoints) and
the Hot Springs Resort (southern end).
The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail
This is one of Southern Africa's most famous and grueling
multi-day hikes. Due to extreme heat and flash flood risks, it is strictly only
open from May 1 to September 15.
